My Favorite Halloween Poem, by one of my most favorite people! - Candy Fowler

A PERFECT NIGHT
It is a night when the leaves are swirling
like a spiraling dragon's tail . . .
a night when the wolves are howling
like an eerie phantom's wail . . .
a night when the cats are hissing
at shadows passing by . . .
a night when the moon is yellow
like a gleaming goblin's eye.

It's time for the great celebration
for the ancient haunting feast.
It's time for the witch’s magic
to wake the sleeping beast.
It's time for the secret dancing
on a misty tombstone hill.
It's time when foolish intruders
are frozen stiff and still.

Witches gather from East to West
to dance beneath the moon,
parading in spooky fashion
casting wands and shaking brooms.
They search through tattered spell books
for recipes with eye of newt.
While elves and fairies peek out
from beneath the old tree’s root.

One witch wears a gossamer fabric
that only spiders spin.
One witch wears curly worm‑ribbons
to keep her snarlies in.
One witch has a rat in her pocket
and a big, hairy wart on her nose.
One witch wears tall boots of eel skin
that pinch her gnarly toes.

All night the witches are singing
in a ghostly floating trance.
All night they weave through the shadows
spilling magic as they dance.
All night they gather the starlight
to burn in their fiery games.
All night with the wind for a partner
they leap around the flames.

And when the dancing is over
they climb upon their brooms.
Look high, the witches are flying,
see their shadows on the moon.
One long, green, bony finger waves
"good‑bye and DON’T sleep tight."
Now it's a quiet graveyard,
It was a perfect night.
